Pre-Production

Script writing 27/2/13
I was asked to produce a script for the first five minutes for our crime drama, with my production group. We were asked to take into account the narrative theories we had learnt about whilst writing our script. We also had to use the conventional components used in a professional script and include it in ours.

I contributed to the script writing by thinking of ideas to put into the script. I thought up some of the dialogue, and also some of the scenes and where they were going to be set. An example of this is the scene where Jessica and her friend are talking at school. I also put ideas forward about the actor direction, an example of this is when Sarah says ‘Get off that laptop and get ready!’ Here I suggested that we said include the way in which Sarah said this, which was in a ‘stern tone of voice’. I believe that our group worked well together, and all put ideas forward to include in the script. After getting feedback from other students in our class I think that our script was well set out and had included the majority of the conventional components found in a script. Although I think we could improve by explaining that the first scene of our crime drama is a flashback as it wasn't clear to other people. Also we need to go through our scripts and check the spelling and grammar which will ensure that our script is up to a professional level.

 Production schedule 4/3/13
I was asked to produce a production schedule for the pre-production stage of our crime drama with my production group. We had to take into account the dates when we believe we will have completed that task by and also who in our production group was going to carry out that task.

I contributed to the task by saying what dates we should complete each task on and also I put myself forward to complete some of the tasks. For example I put myself forward to do both the mood board and the location recce, which I have now completed. I put myself forward to do these things as I believe that I am creative and would be able to complete this task to the best possible standard. Also I think that i will be good at deciding on the locations for our production because I would be able to picture what the scenes would look like in each location. I believe that my production group worked well on sorting out the roles and also the deadline dates. This is because each member of the group contributed to the writing up of it and also put themselves forward for different roles. Although to improve I believe that we could have completed this task quicker, so that we were able to complete other pre-production documents on time. Also we should have thought through who was going to be doing each document, as some members of the production team had been put forward to do more tasks then others.

Contributor release form 5/3/13
During today’s lesson myself and Tayler wrote up the contributor release forms. We need these forms to show our actors featured in the production that they are not being paid. These forms are proof that the actors have agreed to let us show them in the opening sequence of our production. I contributed to this task by thinking up some of the terms, and also writing up the release form. An example of this is the term ‘That you do not have to use the footage which I am in, but if you do you may edit it in any way you wish.’ I believe that me and Tayler work effectively on this as we completed it quickly and to a high standard. Although to improve, we could have adjusted the layout so that it be at more of a professional standard.

Mood Board 5/3/13
During today's lesson I created the mood board. I put myself forward to carry out this task and I believe that I am the more creative member of the production team. The mood board is a visual way to show the ideas put in place for our crime drama. I believe that I done this effectively as I have used pictures to explain our ideas, and it is also colourful and eye-catching. Also it is easy to read as i have not included much detail and wrote in short sentences. Although to improve this pre-production document, I could have included more detail in some parts of the mood board for example, I could have included more background detail about each character. I could have also used more images to explain the text to make it more eye catching.

Location Recce 6/3/13
In today’s lesson me and Tayler wrote up the location recce sheets. These sheets have information about the location we want to use for our production, and they also include pictures of the locations we want to use. We have thought up and written about how suitable the locations are, if there are any hazards that could occur with things such as noise levels or lighting. This helped us to decide whether the locations we have chosen are suitable for our crime drama production. An example of this is in a school there would be a lot of background noise however we would film whilst we have a free lesson so that noise wouldn’t be an issue. I contributed to this task by thinking up some of the locations we could use and also putting forward the idea to use my house as a location. I also thought up some of the hazard such as how close the school is too the car park, and that we would have to be careful where we place the equipment. I believe that both me and Tayler worked effectively on this as we both put forward ideas to include in this document. Also we completed this task quickly and to the best possible standard. Although to improve this we could have included detail about how we were going to keep the lighting the same throughout the filming of each scene so that it would look professional. Also we could have stated what steps we would take to ensure that the background noise is minimal.

Meeting sheet 6/3/13
In today’s lesson we have also created our first meeting minute sheets. This sheet shows what we have discussed in our meeting and the action we were going to take to complete the targets we set for ourselves. For example we discussed that I had to be completing the budget by the end of today’s lesson. We also had to state on the sheet who was completing each task. I believe that this meeting was effective as after the meeting we all knew what we needed to do to complete our aims for the lesson. For example I knew how both me and Tayler were going to complete the location recce sheets. Although to improve this we could have included more detail to the meeting record sheet and also discussed what each of us needed to in more detail.

Budget 6/3/13
In today’s lesson I have written up the budget guide. This document shows how much each thing would approximately cost to hire, and also how the production team are going to contribute to ensure that our production is low budget. For example to hire a production manager for 10 hours it will cost £266, and as we do not have the money to do this a member of the production team will be fulfilling this role. I believed that I have carried this task out to the best of my ability, as I have researched into how much everything will cost and also come up with ways in which our production can be low budget. To improve this I could have changed the layout of the document so that it could be more clear what the total cost would be. Also I could have added references to where I found my information on the costs of each production member and also the equipment needed.

Meeting sheet 11/3/13
In today’s lesson we have also created our second meeting minute sheets. This sheet shows what we have discussed in our meeting and the action we were going to take to complete the targets we set for ourselves. For example we discussed that I had to be completing the funding log by the end of today’s lesson. We also had to write on the sheet who was going to complete each task by putting their initials by the task they needed to complete.
Although to improve this we could have included more detail to the meeting record sheet and also discussed what each of us needed to in more detail.

Funding research log
11/3/13
In today’s lesson I completed the funding research log. This log is used to show who is funding our production, and also gives some background information on Channel 4 and how they receive funding. I have also included the stages in our funding research log to explain how you would submit an idea to Channel 4 for them to consider whether they will give you funding for your production or not.
I believe that I completed this task effectively as I did a lot of research into Channel 4 and how they receive funding. Also I explain the stages we would need to go through to submit our idea to Channel 4.
To improve this document I could have included  an alternative way to how my production will recieve funding if Channel 4 would not fund our production and also add references to where I found all my information from.  I could have also added more information on Channel 4, and how they recieve funding.

Meeting minutes 13/3/13
In today’s lesson we have created our third meeting minute sheets. This sheet shows what we have discussed in our meeting and the action we were going to take to complete the targets we set for ourselves. For example we discussed that I had to complete the shooting script by the end of today’s double lesson. We also had to write on the sheet who was going to complete each task by putting their initials by the task they needed to complete. Although to improve this we could have included more detail to the meeting record sheet and also discussed what each of us needed to in more detail.
Shooting Script 13/3/13
In today’s lesson I have also completed the shooting script. This script is used to show where each scene is taking place and what shots are going to be used. For example I have stated that we will be using a close-up shot of Jessica when she is on her laptop talking to Charlie. Also after writing what shot will be used and what is going to be happening in that shot, I had to include what audio and dialogue is going to be used. I believe that I carried out this task effectively as I have included a lot of information on what is going on in each shot. Although to improve this document I could had fully considered the audio for each shot and also consider any camera movements going on in each scene.
Shooting schedule 15/3/13
In today’s lesson I completed the shooting schedule. This schedule is used to show you when and where you are going to film each scene so that you can ensure the production crew needed will be there. You also have to state what equipment and production crew are required to film each scene.
I believe that I completed this task effectively as I have included all of the relevant information needed. Also I came up with how we are going to get from each location, and how long I believe we will be filming each scene for. For example after asking Tayler if this was possible, that her mum will be transporting all the equipment and production crew to and from each location. To improve this I could have taken more to consider the time given for meal breaks and also the time allowed for filming each scene as they may not take as long as I had put down.

Meeting minutes 19/3/13
In today’s lesson we had our fourth meeting, where we discussed what tasks we were going to complete in today’s lesson. We discussed that we all need to add more detail to our blog entries and upload all of the completed record sheets to our blogs. Also Keeley needs to complete the storyboard and organise her blog so it will be easier to find all of her pre-production documents. I believed that we all worked well when doing this because we agreed and decided quickly and everyone was pleased with the outcome of this meeting. Although to improve this we could have included more detail to the meeting record sheet and also discussed what each of us needed to in more detail.

Copyright clearance letters 19/3/13
As Tayler has already sent a letter to Island Records asking for their permission to use a track for our production, we needed to find back up tracks in case they didn’t give us permission to use the track we asked for.
We have looked on copyright free websites to find a back-up track although they are asking for a payment in exchange for the use of the track. We then looked on youtube to find a cover of a song, which we found on we believe would fit in well with our crime drama production. I have emailed the artist from youtube asking to use his cover of a track, but we haven’t been given permission yet so we will have to carry on looking for back up tracks until we are given permission.

Location release forms 20/3/13
In today’s lesson me and Tayler created the location release forms, which are used to show that we have got permission to film in the locations we have chosen for our crime drama. As our of our locations is Queensbury Academy we had to get permission from the head teacher Mr Button to film there. We also needed to get permission to film in both mine and Taylers house; therefore we will get the location release forms signed by our mums. Both I and Tayler worked effectively on this task as we got it finished quickly so we could get them signed and put into our folders. Although to improve the forms we could add more information and change the layout to make it look more professional.

Meeting Minutes 25/3/13
Today we had another meeting to discuss what we were going to complete during the lesson. We decided that all the members of the production team were going to research copyright free music that we could use for our production. We also decided in the meeting when we would start filming and when we would need to book the equipment and how long for. I think that our group worked well in this meeting as we all put ourselves forward to complete each task. Although to improve we could have included more information about what tasks we were each going to complete in the lesson.

Storyboard
In today’s lesson Keeley completed the storyboard. A storyboard is a creative way to show what is going on in each scene. You would firstly draw a picture to show what is going on the scene, and then write about what is going on the scene, how long the scene will go on for and also the shot which is going to be used. An example of this is the scene where Jessica is typing on her laptop, on the storyboard Keeley firstly drew the picture of Jessica typing on the laptop and then went on to say that it was going to be a close up shot. Whist completing the storyboard I was able to give Keeley ideas on what shots we would use for each scene, such as a close up, establishing or long shot.

Risk assessments
In today’s lesson Tayler and Keeley wrote up and completed the risk assessment sheets. These sheets are used to show what hazards could occur in each setting which we have chosen to film in. The risk assessments include the hazard, who could be affected by the hazard, the likelihood of the hazard occurring, the severity of the outcome, the risk level, how to control the risk, who is responsible and also if the final risk level is acceptable. For example Tayler and Keeley said that in some of our scenes we will be using a laptop and therefore the production team or the actors may trip over these wires. They then stated how we would overcome this hazard by making sure that the wires are not trailing across the room, and also that nobody trips over these wires.

Floor plans
In today’s lesson Tayler completed the floor plans. These floor plans are used to show how everything will be set up, such as the props, camera, tripod, in each setting. This is to show the actors where they will be in the shot and also where the crew need to set up the equipment. For each scene Tayler put where the camera would be positioned, what the camera will be filming, where furniture is, where the doors are and where the actors will be.

Contingency plans
In today’s lesson Tayler completed the contingency plan. This is a plan which shows everything which could go wrong during production, and also how these things could be solved and how it would affect our production. For example Tayler wrote that the camera could break during production or it could run out of battery. To overcome this we would have to ensure that we had a spare camera and battery just in case this did happen. Another example would be that we couldn’t film in the location that we have chosen. We firstly wanted to film at Queensbury school, but in case we are not able to do this we would film in Manshead school.

Costume and props design
In today’s lesson Tayler and Keeley produced a costume and props design sheet. This sheet stated what costumes and props we were going to be using in our production. For example they wrote down that we would need a laptop for the scenes in Jessica’s room and also a laptop for the scene where Paul is having a conversation with Jessica. Another example is the costumes that we are going to use. To do this Tayler and Keeley took pictures of people, including me, wearing the clothes which were going to be worn in our opening sequences, such as pyjamas, leggings and jumpers.

Crew list
In today’s lesson Keeley put together a crew list. This list shows what member of the production team is going to be taking on each role. For example the role of the director is going to be taken on by me, the role of the editor is going to be taking on by Tayler, the role of the stylist will be taking on by Keeley and the rest of the roles will be mainly taken on by all of us. By sorting out which role we will be take on this will then help us through the production and pre-production stages. Although Keeley did this as an individual tasks as a team we had all decided on which roles we believe we could take on.

Call sheet
In today’s lesson Keeley has completed the call sheet. This sheet shows the contact details of the actor, producer, director, camera operator, sound assistant and the location. The sheet also shows the addresses of the location, the location contact, the call times, the sets and props needed, the makeup/costumes needed, the actors/contributors involved in the scene, the camera which we will be using, the meal arrangements, transport arrangements and finally the schedule. Keeley had to complete this sheet for every scene which we were filming as in case of an emergency we would need their contact details, and also the actors would need to know which scenes they would be involved in.

Audio
In today’s lesson Tayler completed the audio sheet which stated which audio we will be going to include in our production. On the sheet Tayler wrote that we will be using the piano cover of ‘turning tables’ by Aldy Santos and also a track called ‘The great unknown’ from the website audioautix.com. These are the two tracks which we want to include in our crime drama production, and will have to get audio permission to use.
